Abstract

MUCINO-MARQUEZ, R.E. et al. Characterization of morphological variation of Cyanotetras (cyanobacteria) in Catemaco Lake, Veracruz, México. Polibotánica [online]. 2021, n.51, pp.43-53.  Epub May 06, 2021. ISSN 1405-2768.  https://doi.org/10.18387/polibotanica.51.3.

Cyanotetras (Hindák, 1988), is a poorly known planktonic and / or metaphytic genus of cyanobacteria, typical of small, slightly eutrophic reservoirs. To date, only three species have been described. The purpose of this study is to report two taxa of this genus found in Catemaco lake, Veracruz (Mexico), and to propose a new variety. Water samples were collected at eleven sites in Catemaco lake, to evaluate the composition of phytoplankton taxocenosis, as well as the characteristics of the physicochemical variables. This study described the species of the genus Cyanotetras, found in Catemaco lake: C. crucigenielloides, C. aerotopa, as well as a new form, C. crucigeniellodes var. mexicana. was an abundant species (2 - 165 x 103 cells L-1). Cyanotetras aerotopa and C. crucigenielloides were rare species (2-16 x 103 cells L-1). It is important to continue studying these species in Catemaco lake to improve the knowledge of the genus.

Keywords : Cyanobacteria; Cyanotetras; phytoplankton; Veracruz.
