Abstract

Geranium seemannii Peyr is a plant used in Traditional Mexican Medicine, in particular there are reports of use in Ozumba de Alzate, municipality of Ozumba, State of Mexico; so that in the present, a sample was collected and the ethnobotanical study was carried out by a survey that allowed to obtain information about the traditional use of the plant in this community. Based on the information collected, it was proposed to carry out the preliminary phytochemical analysis and to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of the aqueous extract from the specie by granuloma model in rats. Data collected showed that the majority of the population uses the whole dry plant as a decoction and “agua de uso” to relieve kidney, stomach and tooth pain, general inflammation, fever and rash. The presence of cardiac glycosides, quinones, reducing sugars, tannins, flavonoids, coumarins and saponins was detected. In the pharmacological evaluation, G. seemannii (125, 250 and 500 mg / kg body weight (bw)) was able to decrease inflammation without producing macroscopic gastroduodenal damage. These results provide scientific data that corroborate the traditional use attributed to G. seemannii in the municipality of Ozumba, State of Mexico.
