Abstract

MIRANDA-ARCE, M.G.; QUIROZ-FLORES, A.  and  ROMERO-ORTIZ, L.. Phytodepuration of water ortophosphates of Reyes Aztecas lake, Tláhuac, Mexico city. Polibotánica [online]. 2018, n.46, pp.221-231. ISSN 1405-2768.  https://doi.org/10.18387/polibotanica.46.14.

Located in the Tlahuac Delegation in Mexico City, “Reyes Aztecas Lake” (Aztec Kings Lake) and the water canals system of Chinampera zone mitigate the variations in water levels during low water season by receiving discharges of waste water from treatment plants coming from Cerro de la Estrella, San Luis Tlaxialtemalco and San Lorenzo Tezonco. However, treated water quality and the overflow houses surrounding the lake have contributed to increase orthophosphate levels in the lake and canals. The objective of this study is to make an estimate of the efficiency of orthophosphates removal using the phytodepuration technique within a controlled environment. The hydrophyte communities that were used are the following: Lemna gibba with Ceratophyllum dermesum, Berula erecta with Lemna gibba and Polygonum punctatum with Hydrocotyle ranunculoyd. The orthophosphates were quantified at the beginning of the experiment, after 72 hours, during the sixth, tenth and fifteenth days. The global removal efficiency for each season was estimated by calculating values at 88%, which demonstrates that hydrophytes were efficient for the improvement of water quality at Reyes Aztecas Lake.
