Abstract

MORA VELAZQUEZ, Salvador. Reflexiones sobre el ciudadano en el espacio público: una crítica de la representación. Convergencia [online]. 2009, vol.16, n.49, pp.331-345. ISSN 2448-5799.

The present work shows some of the recent discussions on the basic notion of political representation as a restrictive mechanism for the political and social action that also limit the presence and determine the behavior of citizens in the public sphere. This argument is based on the necessity of understanding that the new political era must orchestrate processes in which the majorities involve democratic mechanisms of vigilance. Enabling these elements favors accountability in horizontal and vertical ways which altogether with responsiveness as the duty society's role that makes up democratic participation. Thinking of renewing the social accountability mechanisms in a political-public ambit has the purpose not only of building majority governments which in practice suffer a lack of legitimacy because the social process can not be able to generate adequate consensus. Another alternative must be the fact that the political rights are not enough for this condition; instead it is necessary to think of other rights.

Keywords : political representation; public sphere; citizens; accountability.
