Based in his own memoirs, published in 2004, this article analyses the authoritarian discourse of Miguel de la Madrid during his presidency. It addresses three areas in which his authoritarian thought is expressed. The first one is related with the application of a new economic model, the second is on his the relation with the press and the third one is on his approach to democracy and political parties. The use of fear as a political tool to impose liberal economic policies and justify authoritarianism is a central piece of the analyzed discourse.

Keywords : Discourse; authoritarianism; fear; economic liberalism; democracy; political parties; free press.
