Abstract

RODRIGUEZ-PAZ, Carlos Agustín  and  GAMEZ-HUERTA, Víctor Hugo. Experience of ten years of an extracurricular course of surgery in undergraduate medicine. Cir. gen [online]. 2023, vol.45, n.1, pp.7-13.  Epub Sep 30, 2023. ISSN 1405-0099.  https://doi.org/10.35366/110697.

Introduction:

the different proposals to bring undergraduate medical students closer to surgery courses have made it possible to develop surgical skills. The constructivist school, by allowing a scaffolding where various additional skills are integrated, allows new opportunities for surgical teaching.

Objective:

to describe our experience with an experimental undergraduate surgery group.

Material and methods:

a descriptive study describes the students prepared in eight years in eleven courses under an evaluation scheme of the Serrano/Anaya system in live models, under a routine, waiting for their products. Students who emerged from this course were trained as coaching or instructors.

Results:

based on 109 students, an initial grade of 32 points and a final grade of 70 to 80 were obtained, 60 students (70%). 22 students were instructors (18%). Additionally, 15 (13%) presented papers at conferences.

Conclusions:

the process evaluation model of Serrano/Anaya allowed to carry out a sequential preparation similar to the postgraduates, as well as the constructivist model allowed to generate products as an incentive towards generating research projects.
