Abstract

CAMPOS, Valquiria. Estudio de un método alternativo para la purificación de arsénico del agua. Rev. Soc. Quím. Méx [online]. 2003, vol.47, n.3, pp.283-286. ISSN 0583-7693.

Traditional agriculture faces not only environmental contamination by pesticides but also through synthetic fertilizers containing polluting elements, the continued application could compromise or limit the use of the water, especially for human consumption. Ingestion of inorganic arsenic from drinking water is known to cause cancer. This study investigates the concentration of arsenic in a relevant rural zone in São Paulo State. Based on data from the experiments, the steel-wool filter is the most important for residential application. Removal of As (V) and As (III) to parts per million (ppm) level within 15 min is fairly common. The adsorption capacity of the steel-wool is due to electrochemical reactions of iron-arsenic.

Keywords : Water; purification; arsenite; arsenate; adsorption.
