Abstract

ANDUEZA, Isabel; AVILA, Gisela  and  ATTIAS, Doris. Caracterización reológica de hidroxipropilmetilcelulosa con potencial aplicación oftalmológica. Rev. Soc. Quím. Méx [online]. 2000, vol.44, n.3, pp.229-232. ISSN 0583-7693.

It has been confirmed that a dispersion of hydropropyl-methylcellulose (HPMC) does not produce inflammation, is tolerated by the human eye and is capable of covering the intraocular content. It is used as an hydrocolloid in ophthalmic preparations as a viscous agent, in dispersions for contact lenses, in artificial tears as a moistening agent, and as a viscoelastic in the extracapsular extraction of cataracts with the implantation of the intraocular lenses. In Venezuela, as in other countries, it is used in imported viscoelastic products, which are found in the market at very high prices. This contribution will allow to promote the development of a national ophthalmic product, as an alternative for the use of patients with low economic resources. The evaluation of the reologic behaviour of the dispersions of HPMC, at 2% 4000 cps, with water and each one of the following salts: sodium chloride 0.069%, potassium chloride 0.075%, calcium chloride 0.048%, magnesium chloride 0.03%, sodium acetate 0.39%, sodium citrate 0.17%, mix of all those salts and Ringer Lactate solution. All of them were made in a rotational viscosimeter, model Brookfield R.V.T., with a Nº 4 needle, expressing the results in centipoises. All the dispersions presented a pseudoplastic flux, in agreement with that reported for natural tears of the human eye.

Keywords : Hydropropylmethylcellulose (HPMC); viscosity; pdeudoplastic behaviour.
