Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC), is a hydrophilic colloid derived from cellulose, with substituted hidroxipropyl and methoxyl groups. It is used in ophthalmic preparations to improve viscosity, in moist dispersions for contact lenses, artificial tears and as a viscoelastic. It has been proved that a dispersion of HPMC at 2% 4000 cps with these characteristics is tolerated by the human eye and is capable of covering the intraocular content. In this contribution dispersions of HPMC at 2% 4000 cps were evaluated, with water, and with the following salts: sodium chloride 0.059%, potassium chloride 0.075%, calcium chloride 0.048%, magnesium chloride 0.03%, sodium acetate 0.39%, sodium citrate 0.17%. Also a mix of all the salts and Ringer Lactate solution, including pH, surface tension and the characteristics of the film were evaluated. The pH of the isotonic dispersions obtained is in the physiological rank established by the USP XXIII for dispersions of HPMC in ophthalmological use. The films produced, appear favoured by the presence of salts, and the surface tension varies with their presence.
