Abstract

MORENO, Jaime; COLIN, Arturo  and  GOMEZTAGLE, Mercedes. Irradiación de lodos residuales y su uso en el cultivo de avena. Rev. Soc. Quím. Méx [online]. 2000, vol.44, n.3, pp.219-223. ISSN 0583-7693.

Gamma irradiation of sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plant (industrial 90% and domestic 10%) indicated that a dose of 15 kGy destroys fat and oils (33%), detergents (92%), chemical oxygen demand (11%), phenols (50%) and more than 99% of the total bacteria count. Irradiated and unirradiated sewage sludge samples were evaluated as conditioner of soils using cultivation of oats with different proportions of soil and both irradiated and unirradiated sludge. Experiment with proportions of 60/40 of soil and irradiated sludge respectively provide a good test of the use of sewage sludge as conditioner of soils. Gamma radiation does not destroy heavy metals. Irradiated sludge can be applied as conditioner of soils only if the content of heavy metals are according with the normative of agriculture soils.

Keywords : Gamma irradiation; sewage sludge; conditioner of soils; cultivation of oat.
