Abstract

The objective of this research was to evaluate the adaptability and yield of the common bean cultivar Negro Papaloapan in the tropical areas of Veracruz and Chiapas, Mexico. From 1999-2005 yield, reaction to major diseases and its adaptation to soil acidity were evaluated under different moisture conditions: rainfed, residual moisture and irrigated conditions. Negro Papaloapan was included in uniform yield trials with Negro Jamapa, Negro Medellin, and Negro Tropical as control varieties. A completely random block design with three replications was used. A combined analysis of yield and stability was performed and stability parameters of Negro Papaloapan compared with those of commercial genotypes. Negro Papaloapan was validated in 20 semi commercial plots in Veracruz and Chiapas. The average yield of Negro Papaloapan was 1228 kg ha-1, similar to Negro Medellin and superior to Negro Tropical and Negro Jamapa. Its yield across locations and years was classified as stable (bi= 1, Sd2= 0). Negro Papaloapan showed tolerance to rust, angular leaf spot and anthracnose and resistance to the golden yellow mosaic virus of the common bean and adaptation to acid soils. Throughout 20 validation trials, Negro Papaloapan achieved an average yield of 13 64 kg ha-1 that was significantly higher than the commercial controls. Negro Papaloapan showed high yield potential and broad adaptation to the common bean production areas in Veracruz and Chiapas.
