Abstract

FUENTES-DURAN, Martín; CHI-DZUL, Luis Octavio  and  MORENO-GUZMAN, Antonio. The participation of military doctors in the construction of the health system of Chetumal, Quintana Roo (1st part). Rev. sanid. mil. [online]. 2021, vol.75, n.3, e05.  Epub Apr 15, 2024. ISSN 0301-696X.  https://doi.org/10.56443/rsm.v75i3.242.

The city of Payo Obispo (currently called Chetumal) was founded in 1898 as a strategic military and political point to limit arms trafficking and illegal trade on the border with Belize. The unhealthy conditions and limited communication routes favored the appearance of serious public health problems, such as outbreaks of tropical diseases. In this paper we will address the participation of the military doctors who settled in Payo Obispo, during the first half of the 20th century, and whose contributions laid the foundations of the current health system in Quintana Roo.

Keywords : military medicine; Chetumal; health system.
