Abstract

LEVIN ROJO, Elías; GONZALEZ, Emma; LUGO GARCIA, Yael  and  MURGA CHAVEZ, Natasha. "Yo elijo": Participación política y derecho a la ciudadanía de las personas con discapacidad. Polít. cult. [online]. 2015, n.44, pp.137-156. ISSN 0188-7742.

This text describes an action research study focused on the problems for voters with disabilities in Mexico that was conducted during the election process in 2012. It is our interest to know how disabled persons participate on what is considered most important exercise of citizenship: vote, and to give account of novel experiences of citizen participation generated, trough the organization of an observatory of disability vote. Although participation of disabled persons is contemplated in Mexican electoral process, policies for that community show a poor culture of disability and discriminate this social group that apparently has no territory. We state that voting programs for people with disabilities held in electoral institutions, have to be developed from disability, considering their opinions and perspectives. Those who live the condition, need to start working with their rights, their responsibility as citizens and seek development of their belonging group. This experience visualize the problem to rethink public policies in this area and may serve as a spearhead to review other areas of institutional performance.

Keywords : disabled people; citizenship; voting rights; political participation; electoral observation.
