Abstract

OSORIO, Jaime. América Latina bajo el fuego de las grandes transformaciones económicas y políticas. Polít. cult. [online]. 2012, n.37, pp.65-84. ISSN 0188-7742.

Two important processes cross in the last four decades the life of Latin America. One is economic: the implementation of the export pattern of reproductive specialization under neoliberal economic policies. The other is political: the formation of a new type of State, whose visible appearance has been fostered by the so-called transition to democracy and democratic consolidation. Both of them are the pillars of this essay looking to reflect and to explain the situation in Latin America today. The social upheavals and rearrangements favored by these processes, its degree of maturity and consolidation or, conversely, the difficulties for its roots and foundation; the resistance to them and even their defeats, constitute a series of different aspects to account for the main courses that are presented on the regional scenario.

Keywords : Latin America; democracy; authoritarism; popular governments; pattern of capital reproduction.
