The year 1988 is one of the key moments in the transformation of the Mexican State. The Presidential election opened a space of political mobilization against the hegemonic party, the PRI. Michoacan was among the states where this movement grew stronger, especially in the indigenous communities of the Sierra Purepecha which gave birth to an unprecedented political organization. The present essay, supported on oral history methodology, shows the political experience of the Purepechas who organized themselves during the 1988 electoral process and how this civil mobilization turned into an insurrection.
