This paper starts out from a consideration of neoliberalism and its consolidation in Latin América as a regional power pattern, meaning a specific setup for and form of accumulation within the center-periphery polarizing reproduction. The expansión and naturalization of social practices that have been subordinated to mercantilism are reviewed from such a perspective, based on two axes: that of ideological construction and its relationship with economic policy, and that of social subjectivity. Lastly, two likely scenarios-as derived from the current situation and state of affairs-are reviewed: that of a kind of neoliberalism with a "humane side" or, alternatively, that of a widening of social fractures which would lead to the conformation of another power pattern.
