When people evaluate how democracy works in practice, their experience with the outcomes of the regime’s performance is an influential source of satisfaction. Nonetheless, this article argues that the regime’s performance in terms of democratic procedures is an important predictor of citizen’s approval as well. To test this claim, this study analyses Mexico, a nation that has achieved a prominent place among those Latin America’s countries where a vast majority of its citizens is dissatisfied with democracy. The analysis provides evidence that political dissatisfaction in Mexico is only explained in part by people’s disapproving evaluations of the country’s economic situation or the quality of public services. A more complete and coherent picture emerges if the analysis accounts for citizen’s evaluations of the political performance of the incumbent government, the rule of law, and the quality of democratic procedures.
