Abstract

CALDERON SEGUEL, Matías  and  MORALES PEREZ, Cristian. Ethnography of the Seaweed Market in Chile: Economic Transformations and Discourse in Apiao Island, Chiloé. Alteridades [online]. 2016, vol.26, n.51, pp.109-122. ISSN 2448-850X.

The article approaches, from an ethnographic perspective, the main economic and cultural transformations in Apiao Island (Chiloé, south of Chile), during the last four decades, from the penetration of the international market of seaweed in the area. It further examines the emergence of a discursive-symbolic conflict between the local actors, associated to the implementation of such market.

Keywords : economic anthropology; rural territories; non-traditional exports; discursive-symbolic conflict.
