Abstract

GARMA, Carlos. Witchcraft as a Sin in Mexican Protestantism. Alteridades [online]. 2013, vol.23, n.45, pp.37-48. ISSN 2448-850X.

The doom of what Protestantism in Mexico calls witchcraft is studied. The paper examines how the opposition to magical practices is expressed in biblical texts and, afterwards, the historical context in which the pursuit against specialists on beliefs and practices associated with witchcraft is reviewed. To show the antagonism between Protestantism and witchcraft, an example of the fieldwork of the author in the northern mountain range of Puebla is considered. It also shows the way in which this aspect has been reformulated and updated within the contemporary urban and mass media scopes.

Keywords : Protestantism; witchcraft; religious competition; believe.
