Abstract

NIVON, Eduardo  and  SANCHEZ BONILLA, Delia. Some thoughts on cultural consumption studies in Mexico and Chile. Alteridades [online]. 2012, vol.22, n.44, pp.59-79. ISSN 2448-850X.

We compare the surveys on cultural consumption in Mexico and Chile and discuss the different approaches of these studies in each country due to their political and academic differences. We also compare the surveys on cultural consumption on 2003-2004 in Mexico and 2004-2005 in Chile and then the 2009 survey in Chile and 2010 in Mexico. In spite of using different categories, the surveys cover themes that are comparable. We could not explain the differences between the cultural consumption in both countries, but we propose two main lines of inquiry: the higher educational and income levels of the population in Chile and the high esteem Mexican have of their traditional culture and national legacy.

Keywords : cultural consumption; audiences; human development; cultural industries; socio-demographic factors; democracy; public policies.
