Abstract

FISCHER, Eva. Rural young and the military draft: a socialization process between tradition and modernity. Alteridades [online]. 2011, vol.21, n.42, pp.33-51. ISSN 2448-850X.

In this article I reflect on the use of concepts offered by the social anthropological studies on the young and apply them to a case study. In the theoretical discussion I explore the concepts of culture and roots of the social anthropological studies on youth. Then I present a general review of the studies on youth in the last decade in Latin America and the constructivist perspective. The case study following this perspective shows that traditional rites and modern feasts related to the military draft reflect a closer tide with the State and a link with the place of origin, which is embedded in the collective memory and perceptions on the state institutions under the recent socio-political context in Bolivia.

Keywords : socialization; rite; military draft; collective memory; multi-disciplinary studies.
