Abstract

CASTAINGTS TEILLERY, Juan. Antropología simbólica y neurociencia. Alteridades [online]. 2008, vol.18, n.35, pp.129-138. ISSN 2448-850X.

Symbolic Anthropology and Neuroscience. This article tries to establish a comparison between the essential elements of symbolic anthropology (mainly the structuralist type) and the results obtained by current neuroscience. The work begins with the scientific thesis of Gerald M. Edelman and Antonio Damasio. Edelman's work shows the importance of neuronal mappings in the brain and their relationship with the process of categorization. His theory talks about the existence of two types of consciousness: the primary and the extended, and their influence in theformation oflanguage abilities. Damasios thesis mainly enhances the relationship between reason and emotion. Finally, the article studies the correspondence between the results obtained by neuroscience and the analysis of symbolic anthropology to find important similarities between them.

Keywords : Simbolic Anthropology; Neuroscience.
