Abstract

AUTHIER, Jean-Yves. Relations with commerce and ways of inhabiting: The gentrificated central quartiers in France. Alteridades [online]. 2007, vol.17, n.33, pp.9-20. ISSN 2448-850X.

This article attempts to explore, in a systematic and global way, the relations among different types of commerce located in some gentrificated quartiers in France as well as the relations among diverse categories of individuals that inhabit them. What sort of relationship -effective and symbolic- do inhabitants of the gentrficated quartiers establish with diverse types of commerce located near their home? What place does these commercial establishments occupy in the general economy of purchase practices and supplying of these city dwellers? And what role do they play in the ways of inhabiting the quartier as well as of living in the city? These are the key questions in this article and their answers are based on data obtained from two surveys carried out in 1997 and 2003 in Daguerre (Paris), Pentes de la Croix-Rousse (Lyon), Bas-Montreuil (Montreuil), and Sainte-Anne, Saint-Roch and l'Ancien Courrier, which together make up a part of the historical centre in Montpellier.

Keywords : quartiers at the center of cities; gentrfication; commerce; new and old inhabitants.
