Mexican borders (south and north) have always been characterized by their intense local activity in spite of the historical differences between one another. This work explains how the concept of border security may contrast local activities to “national interests” by enhancing the role of the border as a limit towards sovereignty and national identity defense within diverse segments of society. This work points out the consequences (in both borders) of the new national policies concerning the relation border-security targeted to migratory fluctuation of the region such as: control reinforcement and migratory surveillance opposed to an insecurity increase of people crossing the borders; authority abuse concerning all governmental levels and the plans to create a security zone in North America tingled by the investment idea on infrastructure and development. Also, this article takes up some counterproposals in regards to the concept of security, which seem to have a more comprehensive and preventive perspective such as human security or democratic security instead of national security.
