Abstract

MURRIETA LUNA, Edilberto; RUBIO CAMPOS, Beatriz Eugenia; RODRIGUEZ ANGELES, Mario Alberto  and  MOLINA BERMUDEZ, Diana Guadalupe. Simulation of combustion reaction (CH4/O2) in crucible furnace for melting non-ferrous metals. Acta univ [online]. 2019, vol.29, e2146.  Epub Jan 10, 2020. ISSN 2007-9621.  https://doi.org/10.15174/au.2019.2146.

At the Polytechnic University of Juventino Rosas (UPJR), the Department of Metallurgical Engineering is building a crucible furnace to be used in investigations. Given the diversity of fuels that can be used, tests are being carried out to find the fuel with the best efficiency regarding temperature and emission of polluting gases. The objective of this work is to analyze the combustion inside a crucible furnace that operates with natural gas by computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The furnace has a cylindrical shape, with an oval and truncated crucible at the upper part, in whose combustion chamber gases and heat are dispersed isotropically. The simulation was implemented on the ANSYS FLUENT V16 software. Average temperatures of 1700 K, 1240 K and 800 K were determined for cases analyzed with different molar proportions. The results obtained show a suitable temperature profile for the gases in the combustion chamber, and no flow problems are observed inside the furnace.

Keywords : Crucible furnace; stoichiometry; combustion; CFD.
