Abstract

RINCON, Eric  and  WELLENS, Ann. Estimation of ecoefficiency indicators for two Mexican brick factories. Rev. Int. Contam. Ambient [online]. 2011, vol.27, n.4, pp.333-345. ISSN 0188-4999.

The aim of this work is to select indicators or numerical values that reflect the environmental damage caused by productive processes, products and services, to be applied to Mexican companies. Different methodologies based on the ecoefficiency concept have been developed, some in (mostly industrialized) countries, others by international organizations. In order to obtain indicators applicable to Mexico, existing indicator systems have been analyzed and compared. The ecoefficiency approach developed by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development was found to be the most suitable for the present conditions of Mexican companies. Finally, the selected methodology was applied to small Mexican brick factories. It could be verified that the chosen indicators are suitable to measure and compare the environmental impact caused by Mexican companies, as well as to detect improvements that should be made in order to diminish these damages.

Keywords : UNCTAD methodology; environmental efficiency; sustainability; global effects.
