Abstract

DELFIN PAZOS, Araceli; PINEDA ARELLANO, Carlos Antonio  and  SILVA MARTINEZ, Susana. Fenton and photo-Fenton degradation of EDTA and the Cu(II)-EDTA and Cr(III)-EDTA complexes. Rev. Int. Contam. Ambient [online]. 2009, vol.25, n.4, pp.239-246. ISSN 0188-4999.

The degradation of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and the organometallic complexes Cu(II)-EDTA and Cr(III)-EDTA was carried out in a batch system by Fenton and photo-Fenton processes aided with solar radiation. The effects of pH (3-12) and molar ratios of [H2O2]:[EDTA] were studied on the degradation of the metal-EDTA complexes. It was observed that the presence of iron increased the degradation of these complexes. Also, the complex Cu(II)-EDTA was degraded by the Fenton type reaction with solar radiation in the absence of iron at pH 3. The initial concentration of the substrates decreased over 80 % by the photo-Fenton process.

Keywords : EDTA degradation; organometallic complexes; Fenton; photo-Fenton.
