Abstract

The aim of this article is to carry out a critical revision of the variety of international approaches about local labour markets. The delineation of local labour market areas has been undertaken in many countries and subnational levels; despite of that, their use in planning policies has been limited. Its conceptualization has been diverse, as well as the methodologies applied to accomplish their delimitation; moreover, the areas obtained have faced several critics. This document consist of the following sections: the consideration of local labour market areas as a particular type of functional regions, the discussions about local labour market conceptualization, the translation of the concept into operative criteria for areal delimitation and the problems related with it; finally the use that has been made of the areas obtained is analised and some conclusions are reached.
