Abstract

TORRES LIMA, Pablo  and  RODRIGUEZ SANCHEZ, Luis. Agro-environmental dynamics of periurban areas of Mexico: The cases study of Guadalajara and Federal District. Invest. Geog [online]. 2006, n.60, pp.62-82. ISSN 2448-7279.

Studies on recent changes in rural areas of Latin-American cities tend to be limited. This paper analyses the agro-environmental dynamics of farming in the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara and Federal District, Mexico. It is found that urbanization and periurban agriculture result in changes at the regional level of rural landscape and management of natural resources, which imply different trends in local development. It is concluded that environmental policies for periurban agricultural production systems have to include the design, operation and evaluation of strategies for territorial sustainability management through the enhancement of regional social capital.

Keywords : Periurban agriculture; local development; Guadalajara; Distrito Federal; Mexico.
