Abstract

The Mexican Geography and Statistics Association (Sociedad Mexicans de Geografía y Estadística, SMGE) was the first entity created to organize scientific research in Mexico. It was also the first institution that pursued the development and practice of geography. In the 170 anniversary of its foundation as Instituto Nacional de Geografía y Estadística, this work considers the association's role in the organization of science and the building of the nation during the nineteenth century.
