Abstract

AGUILAR, Adrián Guillermo  and  VAZQUEZ, María Isabel. Crecimiento urbano y especialización económica en México: Una caracterización regional de las funciones dominantes. Invest. Geog [online]. 2000, n.42, pp.87-108. ISSN 2448-7279.

The aim of this paper is to elaborate a functional specialization for the main cities in the country, using the principal components' statistical analysis and based on data of active population by economic sector in 1990. To this end 101 cities were chosen with a population size ranging from 50 000 to over one million inhabitants. From this multivariate method the dominant economic functions were identified In order to group cities with similar features, which allowed to make relationships with their population size and their regional location and their type of functional specialization. It is stressed that the presence or absence of specific economic functions can be a useful additional indicator of regional inequality.

Keywords : Urban system; dominant economic functions; regional inequality; Mexico.
