Abstract

SOTO MORA, Consuelo  and  FUENTES AGUILAR, Luis. Problemática en la producción y comercialización de hortalizas en México: El caso de la fresa y el melón. Invest. Geog [online]. 1992, n.24, pp.79-94. ISSN 2448-7279.

The conditions in which the production and commercializatios of vegetables are developed in Mexico are analyzed in this paper, especially, the problems which arise in the case of strawberries and melons. This is a sub-sector that had a slow growth in the past in spite of having a great importance from the nutritional pont of view; but when foreing funds appear, we can observe a strong expansión of this complex. On the other hand, we have to point out that the groowing use of chemical substance and industrial and energy imputs have led to the modernization. This has caused in the structure of rural employment, in land owneship, in the fertility of the soil, in the distribution of food to national and international levels and also in the nutritional habits of people, etc. The demand for fresh fruit and vegetables increases constantly, nevertheless, the consumption of them is often difficult in the internal market because they are products that increase in price every day and for this reason they are not within the reach of low income sectors. That is why one can state that this complex is basically an exporter both in its agricultural stage as well as in its manufacturing stage, and that its main market is the United States of America, especially for fresh fruit and vegetables in the winter and beginning of the spring seansons. This impact of the agroindustrial methods in the sector has been decisive for the spectacular growth in the production of fruit and vegetables that has been attained.
