In this paper we report on the use of GIS and remote sensing techniques, validated by field observations, as means for modelling gully erosion dynamics in Quaternary volcanic terrains. 75% of actual gullied areas occurs on gently sloping (< 15% gradient), accumulative terrains, under rain- fed agriculture or grassland. Areas under severe gully erosion risk were predicted; the model was successfully applied to a different area of the same physiographic province. The approach is suggested for determinig conservation priorities.
