Abstract
BUCHHOFER, Ekkehard and AGUILAR, Adrián Guillermo. Nezahualcóyotl: planeación urbana y ordenación espacial en la periferia de la Ciudad de México. Invest. Geog [online]. 1983, n.13, pp.131-173. ISSN 2448-7279.
Due to the large growth of latinamerican metropolitan areas new urban peripheral settlements have formed adjacent to them; the spatial organization of these settlements appears as a difficult achievement for urban planning. This study is looking at those concepts of spatial organization that urban planning has applied in the peripheral expansion of Mexico City; special emphasis is given to the application of the concepts of the 'iron-grid layout' and the 'neighbourhood unit' in a peripheral settlement, called Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl, great low income area of nearly 2 million inhabitants. It is argued that, urban planning has not created adequate concepts to cope with the latinamerican urban characteristics, but instead, has acted as an agent of sociopolitical stability and control.
