Abstract

SALAZAR CANTU, José de Jesús  and  ARENAS DREGER, Laura. An economic happiness model and its evidence for Mexico. Estud. soc [online]. 2016, vol.24-25, n.47, pp.150-178. ISSN 0188-4557.

Using an economic approach, a theoretic model is proposed for the study of the happiness determinants, which is empirically estimated for México based on the micro-data obtained from the self-reported well-being section of the Encuesta Nacional de Gasto de los Hogares (National Enquire for the Home Spending) 2012, by Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (National Institute for Statistics and Geography). Mexican society is an interesting case, since it reports high happiness levels, which can be compared to those of developed countries, but it also reports low levels on some welfare indicators. Econometric estimations allowed to obtain statistically significant models. Results indicate that for the Mexican population, seen as a whole, happiness is mainly determined by the individual perception of health.
