Abstract

ALZATE ZULUAGA, Mary Luz  and  ROMO MORALES, Gerardo. Local press and agenda setting of local government: Analysis of Cases in Colombia and Mexico. Estud. soc [online]. 2015, vol.23, n.46, pp.62-81. ISSN 0188-4557.

We analyze the impact of the printed press in the local public agenda setting process. This is from the coverage of newspapers with regional circulation about issues related to public affairs of two municipalities one in Mexico and one in Colombia. We set our own position about it and contrast it with the empirical results obtained from fieldwork. The main conclusions drawn from the article are: a) the demands of citizenship, are not reflected in what the media actually reproduce as the reality of municipalities under study, b) the selection of events that occur in the press of the period and municipalities of study, are primarily suggested by government actors to justify policies or decisions previously taken, therefore, c) the media not fulfilled, in our case studies, the social function of forming public opinion for the real democratization of social and political processes of our societies.

Keywords : printed press; government agenda; local governments; Mexico; Colombia.
