Abstract

ROBLES ZAVALA, Edgar. Social welfare and natural protected areas: A case study on the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico. Estud. soc [online]. 2014, vol.22, n.44, pp.120-144. ISSN 0188-4557.

This study analyzes the characteristics of poverty and social welfare of the beneficiaries of social programs. This is in three communities located at the National Park Lagunas de Chacahua, on the coast of Oaxaca. Data collection was conducted in two different periods of time, corresponding to the Progresa program in 1999, and Oportunidades, in 2007. We used the approach of Sustainable Livelihoods to analyze the dynamics of assets and diversification strategies of the households in the three communities. We conclude that the welfare of the three communities had no significant change; however, the survival of households is based on the indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources within the park, in the absence of a regulatory framework.

Keywords : poverty; natural protected areas; sustainable livelihoods; Chacahua; Oaxaca.
