Abstract

DEL ANGEL-PEREZ, Ana Lid  and  VILLAGOMEZ-CORTES, José Alfredo. Food, health and poverty in urban marginal areas: a case study in Veracruz-Boca del Rio, Mexico. Estud. soc [online]. 2014, vol.22, n.44, pp.12-35. ISSN 0188-4557.

Household food practices in marginalized areas of Veracruz-Boca del Rio, Mexico, were characterized by the Household Dietary Diversity Score and its associated socioeconomic variables in 120 households. Households were classified into four socioeconomic levels, 99% lied under poverty conditions. Food expenditure represented 52%-71% of household income. Foods high in calories and low quality animal protein are predominant in diet. Fruit and vegetable consumption is low. At all income brackets, households showed lower dietary diversity, not exceeding 50% of basic foods needed for a good nutrition. Most respondents (56%) reported the presence of someone in the household affected by some kind of Non-Communicable Chronic Disease). Also, at least one member of the extended kin (80%) has a medical prescription of dietary modification and increased physical exercise.
