Abstract

MORA DE LA MORA, Gabriela de la. Refineries installation in the Tula Region, Hidalgo, Mexico: An analysis from modernity. Estud. soc [online]. 2012, vol.20, n.40, pp.181-210. ISSN 0188-4557.

This article analyzes the various changes undergone in the region of Tula, Hidalgo, Mexico, since the installation of the Miguel Hidalgo refinery, including social, economic, political and territorial aspects, as well as the resulting dilemmas related to the construction of the new Bicentenario refinery. By using Marshall Berman's theoretical framework on modernity, we try to identify the context into which the refining industry develops in Mexico, including the relevant aspects of the setting-up processes implemented by refineries in Tula, and the transformations brought about in their environments as a consequence of refinery installation.

Keywords : development tragedy; refineries; Tula Hidalgo region; industry and pollution.
