Abstract

This work analyses the Spanish intensive cattle complex that has become one of the most efficient ones in Europe in spite of the deficit in cereals and oil seeds' for animal feeding. Its weight in agricultural production, its evolution, and the structure of the production chain is analyzed. Also, the paper examines the structure of every meat production chain, its vertical coordination relationships and the strategy of the main cattle and meat production companies. A reference is made to changes that took place in the meat production system along the fifties and sixties, when the current production system began, and which success is based upon the organization and vertical coordination inside the production chain and in the intensification of production factors.
