Abstract

VILA PEREZ, Olga Lourdes. Self-Employment in Light of the Cuban Reality: Trends and Challenges in the 21st Century. Econ: teor. práct [online]. 2022, n.57, pp.169-191.  Epub Sep 05, 2022. ISSN 2448-7481.  https://doi.org/10.24275/etypuam/ne/572022/vila.

This article offers some reflections on the world of work and its behavior in contemporary, twenty-first century Cuban society. The forms of non-state management in existence since 2011, together with the governmental economic sector and other types of property, produce a new panorama in terms of employment, wages and income policy. The objective of the text is to reflect on self-employment as a new type of employment, considering its behavior, trends and challenges. It is therefore held that this type of employment has occupied a fundamental space within management and production forms and has contributed significantly to occupation and income earning for a large portion of Cuban citizens, as part of the transformations supported by the updating of the economic and social development model in recent years.
