The pharmaceutical sector has been considered by some countries as strategic one because by showing its capabilities to make face to population health problems contributes to social wealth fare and economic growth. Even if multinationals pharmaceutical firms have an oligopolistic dominance in the international drug markets, some emerging countries have developed some relative technological and innovation capabilities. This paper studies the magnitude of pharmaceutical local firms or institutions of Argentina, Brazil, Cuba and Mexico efforts axed to research and development, technological transference and human capital skills on pharmaceutical fields. Taxonomy of firm's technological capabilities is proposed by considering the pharmaceutical innovation system and intellectual property system of Argentina, Brazil, Cuba and Mexico.
