Abstract

GUTIERREZ PINA, Claudia L.. Leafless poppies or the horror of motherhood. “El último verano” by Amparo Dávila. Lit. mex [online]. 2018, vol.29, n.2, pp.133-151. ISSN 2448-8216.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.litmex.29.2.2018.1133.

“El último verano” a text belonging to the third volume of tales by Amparo Dávila Árboles petrificados (1977), is shaped in the careful work with one of the most ingrained structures of the feminine symbolism: motherhood. The strength of the text lies in the treatment of the feminine symbolism, in a critical exercise that takes the figure of the mother to its breaking point, by dismantling the symbols that support it, to gradually articulate motherhood as the agent of horror in the story. This paper analyzes the symbolic substratum of the text, that involves the ambivalent character of the mother archetype, merging the opposites of creation-destruction, life-death.

Keywords : Amparo Dávila; feminine symbolism; archetype; horror.
