Abstract

CHAVES, José Ricardo. The Bhagavad Gita according to Saint Madero. Lit. mex [online]. 2012, vol.23, n.1, pp.69-81. ISSN 2448-8216.

Having as context the large and varied Bhagavad Gita's reception in the 19th century, this essay develops the particular reading that Francisco I. Madero did of this hindu text, from a spiritualist point of view, something according to the boom of the neoreligious trends like Spiritualism and Theosophy at the turn of the century. This situation happens at the same time that some artists and intellectuals take an interest in the Orient and specially the philosophies of India, like José Vasconcelos in Mexico, reader of the Madero's commentaries.

Keywords : Francisco I. Madero; Spiritualism; Orientalism; Bhagavad Gita.
