Abstract

VAZQUEZ, Juan de Dios. Betrayed loves, unresolved homelands: Julia and Antonia by Ignacio Manuel Altamirano. Lit. mex [online]. 2011, vol.22, n.1, pp.99-117. ISSN 2448-8216.

This article studies Julia (1870) and Antonia (1872), two novels written by Ignacio Manuel Altamirano. It analyzes how these works resist the generical conventions of national foundational fictions. The differences we find between these novels and the canonical works of the time, can be read as an alternative ideological model that defies the ethical-sentimental project promoted by Criollo elites and the dominant notions of race and class during the 19th century.

Keywords : subaltern identity; polis and eros; 19th century Mexico.
