Abstract

GUTIERREZ, León Guillermo. Religious poetry in independent and colonial Mexico. Lit. mex [online]. 2010, vol.21, n.1, pp.7-21. ISSN 2448-8216.

Religion, in whichever of its manifestations, be it primitive or complexly elaborated, refers to the system of communication which man has created between himself and the divinities. Religious poetry testifies to the human-God relationship be it of a celebratory form, prayer, petitioning, or praise. In this work a panoramic vision is offered of Catholic poetry in Mexico during the colonial period, as well as in the 19th and 20th centuries, and also studies the meaning of the spiritual poetical exercise of poets, some of whom began from the cultural obligations imposed by the Church, and others in whom the religious poem becomes an authentic bridge between the poet and God.

Keywords : Religious poetry; Catholic poetry in México.
