Abstract

ABOY CARLES, Gerardo. Latin American populism in perspective. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2023, vol.85, n.spe2, pp.169-196.  Epub Sep 30, 2023. ISSN 2594-0651.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2023.2ne.60987.

This paper describes the characteristics of five waves of studies about populism in Latin America. That description allowed us to establish the different meanings that the word has acquired in the region up to the present day. We analyze comparatively the constitution and development of some emblematic populist experiences in the region during the first half of the Twentieth Century. This enables us to critique a number of common and widespread assumptions in populism studies. Finally, we outline strong differences between classical Latin American populisms and some current experiences commonly qualified as “populists”.

Keywords : populism; Latin America; political identities; democratization.
