Abstract

ORTIZ-RUIZ, Nicolás  and  DIAZ-GRAJALES, Constanza. A look at social vulnerability from families. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2018, vol.80, n.3, pp.611-638. ISSN 2594-0651.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2018.3.57739.

This study uses a qualitative approach to attempt to understand the experiences of vulnerability of families classified as poor, living in the municipality of Cali, Colombia. It uses the AVEO model, which incorporates assetsliabilities and the structure of opportunities as an analytical resource to study vulnerability, beginning with the dialectic relationship between the capacity for agency and the structured historical processes that determine the action of individuals and groups. Social vulnerability is conceived as social production within the capitalist context, whose dynamics tend to maintain unequal societies, minimizing the possibilities of social mobility.

Keywords : vulnerability; assets; opportunity structure; family strategies.
