Abstract

RAMIREZ KURI, Patricia. Public space, a space for everyone? Reflections from Mexico City. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2015, vol.77, n.1, pp.07-36. ISSN 2594-0651.

This article addresses the issue of public space as a place for meeting, communication and relations that is produced in the city in a conflicting, fragmented and contradictory manner. The text conceptually discusses what is public in the context of the economic order of flexible capitalism and the democratization of social life, focusing on Mexico City within the universe of Latin American cities. It analyzes the actors and social practices involved in the social and symbolic construction of the public space, in which differences are settled, rights claimed and social ties created.

Keywords : city; public space; citizenship; urban conflict.
