Abstract

GIRAUDO, Laura  and  MARTIN-SANCHEZ, Juan. Two core debates on the concept of race, 1943-1952. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2013, vol.75, n.4, pp.527-555. ISSN 2594-0651.

This article examines the debates developed in two contexts: América Indígena journal and the indigenista sphere on the one hand and UNESCO and the discussion following World War II on the other, both emblematic of the disputes over the concept of race in the mid-20th century. Due to their contents and scope, these debates have a significance that goes beyond the circumstances in which they took place, although few periods have been as propitious for these controversies as the 1940s and 1950s.

Keywords : race; racism; social sciences; anthropology; indigenism; UNESCO.
